Rakesh Sharma (born January 13, 1949 in Patiala, Punjab, India) was the first Indian and 138th man to visit space.

Rakesh Sharma, then squadron leader and pilot with the Indian Air Force embarked on the mission in 1984 as part of a joint space program between the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Soviet Interkosmos space program and spent eight days in space aboard the Salyut 7 space station. Launched along with two other Soviet cosmonauts aboard Soyuz T-11 on the 2 April 1984, was 35-year-old Rakesh Sharma. During the flight, Squadron Leader Sharma conducted multi-spectral photography of northern India in anticipation of the construction of hydroelectric power stations in the Himalayas. In a famous incident, he was asked by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from the space and he replied, Saare Jahan Se Achcha, (translates to better than all the world) which was from the first line of a famous poem by Muhammad Iqbal.

He was conferred with the honour of Hero of Soviet Union upon his return from space. The Government of India conferred its highest gallantry award(during peace time), the Ashoka Chakra on him and the other two Russian members of his mission.

Squadron Leader Sharma and his backup, Wing Commander Ravish Malhotra, also prepared an elaborate series of zero-gravity Yoga exercises which the former had practised aboard the Salyut 7. Retired with the rank of Wing Commander, Rakesh Sharma joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as a test pilot. He was based at the Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in Bangalore and worked on the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft program.

Rakesh Sharma has now retired from active employment.

In November 2006 he took part in India's top scientists gathering [1] organized by ISRO which gave the green signal to an Indian manned space mission.

This is not the place to contact us. Go to Wikipedia:Contact us for more information. Thank you.

[edit] you sure contacting school admin is a good idea

every computer IP owned by the western australian education department has been blocked due to the students repeated vandalism. (it won't let me edit even if i log in) but i doubt that contacting school admin would help as they probable don't like the thought of students contributing to wikipedia on school internet (they have very tight bugets, and can't aford internet beening used for non nessicary uses)

[edit] Am I blocked?

I entered a small addition to the article on Extreme physical information today (Sept. 14, 2006) but now see that it is not in the article. Please explain.150.135.248.197 21:36, 14 September 2006 (UTC)B.Roy Frieden

[edit] Blocked by an ex-user

Here's what I get when I try to edit:

Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing.

You were blocked by Jaranda for the following reason (see our blocking policy): Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "JJoseph". The reason given for JJoseph's block is: "sock of Js2Jo". Your IP address is 152.163.101.14.

"Jaranda" is no longer a member -- HELP!! (Why can I edit here but not elsewhere??) MajorRogers 21:44, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello! This isn't really the right place to contact us or to request unblocking help (for that, please go back to Wikipedia:Contact us and Wikipedia:Contact us/blocked), but the IP address you posted resolves to AOL. Many IP addresses of blocked users are also blocked to prevent abuse, and unfortunately, it seems like you were assigned that same IP number by AOL, which uses a large number of addresses that vary with each page, and thus were blocked from editing. The reason that you can edit elsewhere is because the IP address often changes with each page with AOL, thus meaning that you will be autoblocked on some pages. Thanks, and let me know if you still have problems. Flcelloguy (A note?) 02:54, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

help

I have been blocked from editing.

You can wait until the block expires.

Now might be a good time to take a break from Wikipedia, do something else, or go to the library.

Contact the blocking admin.

If you believe you were wrongly blocked and want to do something about it right now, your first step should be to contact the blocking admin, especially if you believe that the block was due to a mistake or misunderstanding. Go to the user page for the admin you need to contact, and choose "Email this user" from the toolbox on the left-hand side of the page.

You may appeal.

If you have contacted the blocking admin and haven't been able to work things out, you may appeal the block if you believe the block is unfair. However, in most cases the block will expire before your appeal is addressed.

If you are editing from a school, the school administration may be able to help.

Some blocks affect everyone who is editing from an entire school. School administrators are frequently able to deal with inappropriate use of Wikipedia through enforcement of existing school policies. Once this is done, a school-wide block can be removed upon request from the school administration (if it has not expired on its own).
